Regional Transportation Strategic Information Design

Client: Metrolinx

The Objective

The objective was to design an accessible discussion paper that translated complex regional transportation data into a clear vision for the public. Working with the Policy and Planning team, the challenge was determining which data insights were most critical for the public to understand. We needed to strike a balance: providing the in-depth analysis required for a formal report while ensuring the progress and future visions were presented in a digestible, visual manner.

The Design Process & Delivery

I worked as a close creative partner to the Policy & Planning team, ensuring the document functioned as both a technical record and a public engagement tool.

  • Collaborative Planning: I held design thinking sessions with the Policy and Planning team to facilitate the identification of public involvement challenges. These sessions helped us determine what information the public would find most valuable and how to prioritize it within the report.

  • Information Design: I focused on translating the team's research into clear visual assets. This involved creating custom infographics and maps that simplified transit logistics, making the progress on regional goals visible and easy to follow.

  • Visual Hierarchy: I structured the layout to allow for "layered reading"—ensuring that high-level insights were immediately scannable, while the detailed analysis remained organized for those who wanted to dive deeper into the data.

The Outcome

The final document successfully bridged the gap between complex policy and public understanding. By making the data insights more accessible, the paper facilitated a more informed public dialogue and provided the Policy team with a professional, cohesive framework to showcase their work and future visions.
